A modern interpretation of the neighboring William’s Ore Refinery, this building serves a family’s homestead in the San Luis Mountains. Simple forms pay respect to the region’s mining heritage with the structure’s shed roofs mirroring the slope of the hillside they inhabit. These forms are clad in stained beetle-kill pine which is a local byproduct of wildfire prevention services throughout the valley. Inside, alder-clad masses define a layered multi-story floorplan that follows the topography of the site - guiding both occupants and natural light through the home by means of a series of “shafts". These slices through the home are reminiscent of the mines which lend their architecture to the home.
